CTF events are gaining worldwide significance across cybersecurity and the entire IT industry, as they provide diverse opportunities for students and professionals alike in terms of real-world cybersecurity experience, networking, career development, and more.
How to play Capture the Flag varies depending on the type of competition you’re participating in. There are two main categories of CTF competitions: jeopardy and attack-defense.
This type of CTF involves a series of questions that provide competitors with clues to solve complex tasks in a particular order. These clues guide them towards the techniques and methodologies that they will need going forward. Points are awarded to teams for each task they successfully solve. You can gain more points for successfully completing a task that is more challenging. These challenges often cover different topics, including digital forensics, reverse engineering, steganography, and the like.
In this CTF style, a team must defend a host PC while attacking the other target PCs. Each team is given a designated time to patch and secure their PCs, aiming to identify as many vulnerabilities as possible before the opposing teams can initiate their attacks. Points are awarded to teams for defending against attacks from opposing teams and for successfully infiltrating others. The team that accumulates the highest number of points is declared the winner.
What is a hackathon, and how is it different from CTF?
While often correlated with CTF, a hackathon is different from a CTF competition, as the former tends to focus more on creating innovative solutions or developing software or hardware projects in a collaborative environment.
