The Criminal Law course highlights the key provisions of the Criminal Code of Canada and the most important cases. The course discusses the sources of criminal law, the intersection of criminal law and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the interpretation of criminal law provisions, possible defences and a brief overview of the criminal trial process.

This course will endeavour to help you identify the relevant issues, select and identify the material rules of law including those in the Criminal Code of Canada and the relevant case law as understood in Canada, and explain how the law applies on each of the relevant issues, given the facts presented.

Course Objectives

  • Prepare students to successfully complete the NCA Exam in Canadian Criminal Law*
  • Introduce and explain the relevant concepts and selections from materials to assist with exam preparation
  • Explain key provisions of the Criminal Code and the leading cases to get a comprehensive overview of Canadian Criminal law
  • Introduce the intersection of criminal law and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms
  • Explain how to interpret provisions of the criminal code and possible defences 
  • Provide overview of criminal trial process
  • Offer an opportunity to analyse and apply knowledge to practice questions and provide feedback
  • Review exam writing techniques to assist in the successful completion of the NCA exam

*The NCA Exam Preparation are professional development courses and do not require approval under the Private Career Colleges Act of Ontario, 2005.

You will receive a pre-recorded session** aimed at helping you understand key exam techniques, how to use the IRAC method effectively and the approach you should take in answering NCA exam questions successfully.

Brian Eberdt is a criminal defence lawyer based out of downtown Toronto. He was called to the bar in 2012 and practised with the firm of Lockyer Campbell Posner until opening his own practice in 2019. Brian practices at all levels of court within Ontario and has succeeded at each.
