Constitutional Law explains the relationship between state and citizen in Canada, such as the difference between federal and provincial powers and the role of the judiciary. The course discusses how constitutional law applies in real world scenarios. Constitutional Law is the longest course on offer, as the material is complex and dense.

The course provides an understanding of the various components of the constitution and the key principles and concepts underlying it, including the nature and sources of the constitution, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and aboriginal law.  By the end of this course, you should have a firm understanding of an introduction to the various components of Canadian constitutional law, and to the basic principles necessary for understanding and applying the provisions of the constitution in legal practice.

Course Objectives

  • Prepare students to successfully complete the NCA Exam in Canadian Constitutional Law*
  • Introduce and explain the relevant concepts and selections from materials to assist with exam preparation
  • Explain the make up, sources and key principles of the Canadian Constitution
  • Introduce and explain the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
  • Provide further understanding of Aboriginal Law in Canada and the relationship of Aboriginal Peoples to the Canadian state and legal system
  • Offer an opportunity to apply knowledge to practice questions and provide feedback
  • Review exam writing techniques to assist in the successful completion of the NCA exams

*The NCA Exam Preparation are professional development courses and do not require approval under the Private Career Colleges Act of Ontario, 2005.

You will receive a pre-recorded session** aimed at helping you understand key exam techniques, how to use the IRAC method effectively and the approach you should take in answering NCA exam questions successfully.

**All courses require a short mandatory Exam Techniques pre-recorded session as a prerequisite. This session is included in your fees and will be made available to you throughout your studies

Rebecca Lockwood is a licensed barrister and solicitor with the Law Society of Ontario, and is our lead NCA Exam Prep program designer. She graduated from the prestigious Juris Doctor program at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto.
