What is Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses. They can cause diseases ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV). Some transmit easily from person to person while others do not. COVID-19 is a new disease that has not been previously identified in humans.
China determined that a novel coronavirus (referred to as COVID-19) is responsible for the outbreak of pneumonia in Wuhan. Authorities in China and worldwide are conducting further investigations to better understand where the disease came from, how it is spread and the clinical severity of illness in humans.
What is the risk in Canada?
Canada’s public health service has assessed the risk from COVID-19 as low for Canada.
What are the symptoms?
Those with COVID-19 may have little to no symptoms. You may not know you have symptoms of COVID-19 because they are similar to a cold or flu.
Symptoms may take up to 14 days to appear after exposure to COVID-19.
Symptoms have included:
- difficulty breathing
- pneumonia in both lungs
In severe cases, infection can lead to death.
What is TSoM doing to ensure safety of the TSoM community?
TSoM is monitoring information and recommendations about COVID-19 from regional and provincial medical health officers. The college is also actively reviewing its protocols and contingency plans as well regularly meeting with key stakeholders to ensure the safety of students, faculty and administration. TSoM is also taking precautions to prevent the spread of communicable illnesses by constantly issuing updates and advice.
Along with our faculty and staff, the safety of our students is TSoM’s number-one priority. We have already contacted our students who traveled from countries that are on advisory list of Travel Canada and Ontario Provincial Authorities to check on their well-being and to provide support as well as the latest travel advice and guidance. TSoM is also working to ensure this disruption does not negatively impact any program requirements and graduation. If any TSoM Co-op or exchange students have questions, please contact your program coordinator to discuss your specific situation.
Should students, staff or faculty with flu-like symptoms attend class/work?
Those with flu-like symptoms, who have not travelled internationally to an affected region, should stay at home.
I am affected by travel restrictions and cannot return to Canada. What should I do?
If you have not started your program at TSoM, please contact your student advisor immediately. If you are a current student at TSoM and are not able to return to Canada, please inform TSoM Academics Team at email@example.com or Student Services at firstname.lastname@example.org for accommodating.
I am planning to travel in the coming days. What should I do?
Students planning to travel to affected areas should cancel or postpone their trip if travel is not essential.
People in my classes are sick, how do I know it's not COVID-19?
Cold and flu season is upon us (typically October to March every year), so it is not unusual for people to get colds and flu during this time. Please follow the usual health precautions such as washing your hands often, don’t share food/beverages with others who are sick, stay home if you are sick and practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette to prevent the spread of illness.
If I need to self-isolate because of possible exposure to COVID-19, who do I need to tell at TSoM?
